Letters From The Southern Hemisphere

Hey Kathleen.

I miss moron night - there are plenty of bars out here in Chiang Mai (it's in the North, near China) full of enticing ladies who smile at me and frown at Charlotte as we pass, but we don't fancy the looks of any of them. I'd like to do my Otis Redding turn at karaoke out here - see how it goes down in a country which takes the art form with the right amount of gravitas. No chance yet, however. The nearest I've come was looking on in our Bangkok hotel as Asian ladies sang Western pop songs in strange, modulated tones. Up North it's cooler, older and nicer. We feel like we can engage folk in conversation on the street now, and they won't attempt to sell us their cousin, or at least their cousin's home-scratched antiques.
