Letters From New Zealand

6/12/99 Russell

A day memorable for three reasons:

1) Sheepworld, Warkworth! When we told our Dunedin friends in Melbourne beforehand that we expected this to be one of the highlights of our holiday in NZ, they looked at us askew and muttered something about 'bloody strange Poms'. How could they have doubted us! At Sheepworld, we got to pet sheep, feed sheep, get covered in slobbery sheep saliva, have a chance to buy sheep-orientated gifts, pet some more sheep, feed lambs and goats and ducks and sheep, er... What a place! What en experience! (A few days later, we passed up what would doubtless have been the experiences to end all experiences, Cow World! No, don't give us any beef about it...)

2) The accommodation in Bream Bay, on the Bay Of Islands. The path down to the secluded house was actually more difficult than many of the short walks we attempted in Darwin. In the rowing boat, I got to proof that I'm totally uncoordinated (and not a little lazy). Later in the evening, after Charlotte disappeared to bed (tired out by the drive down from Auckland) I was read love poetry by the local editor of the Russell Review, Eva Brown. Who also praised my samples of writing (culled from the last two week's Ages) a fraction too highly, if you know what I mean...

3) Er, that's it. The house we stayed in was rather delightful, though. And I certainly couldn't complain about Eva's welcome.
