I remember one afternoon on a train. It was one
of the old orange west coast electric trains, running from Glasgow
Central to Ayr, although my own destination was Troon, or nowhere.
I'd bought a fanzine called Are
You Scared To Get Happy in the old Virgin store on the way home,
and I remember well the vicarious thrill of reading the words
"I'm
a record label!" printed
in bright red ink. Right then I said to myself that one day I
wanted to experience the thrill first hand.
One day, one day... So it's taken a long time, but I'm saying it
now at last: I'm
a record label!
So Unpopular. A label of 7" vinyl singles, for the sole reason
that I still like vinyl 7" singles. Once upon a time I'd have
made some comment about it all being political, and hell maybe
it still is on some strange level, but truth be told this is all
it's about in the end: I like 7" singles.
Most of my favourite labels seemed to be built around 7" singles,
and all did something special with the format. Postcard, Creation,
Esurient, Simple Machines, Slumberland, Sarah, Johnny Kane... all
great names who did things with style. In some respects those are
the templates for Unpopular; like a magpie I'm
stealing ideas from everyone and throwing them together to make
my own version of the dream. So hopefully for all of you who
pick up Unpopular releases there will be references and resonances
to tune in on. It should be a great adventure.
If you can help stock any Unpopular singles, please get in touch
and we'll see what we can sort out. Similarly if you think you're
just the band to appear on an Unpopular single, or are just the
artist to sleeve one, drop us a line.
