The Writers |
Kevin Pearce: Kevin is the author of the highly acclaimed book Something Beginning With O (Heavenly books 1992), as well as of the influential Hungry Beat and Same Sky fanzines of the early and mid '80s. In the late '80s he ran the Esurient record label, releasing what became lost classics by The Claim, Hellfire Sermons and Emily. The Esurient shows of the time are now legendary, not least for the above bands' performances, but also for being the London launch pad for the Manic Street Preachers' razorblade beat of violent sensitivity. In the late '80s Kevin also contributed to Tangents' paper predecessor Fire Raisers. Alistair Fitchett: Alistair started Tangents in 1995 initially as a paper exercise, following earlier forays into the fanzine world with The Melody Haunts My Reverie trilogy, Fantastique! and Fire Raisers. Several of his articles from those fanzines and from the pages of Tangents were collected in the book Young and Foolish (Stride books, 1998). When not writing for and organising the Tangents site, he tries to write fiction. In the mid to late '90s he was involved in the Glitch and Living Room clubs in Exeter, DJing and producing multimedia art installations. He has recently given up painting although he still occasionally makes sonic collage under the Piezoelectric Unit moniker. Marino Guida: Marino is the Tangents academic, taking time off
from his PHD studies in Kafka to supply Tangents with a steady
stream of essays that speak excitedly about his passion for music and
film, and in particular, Jazz. Robin Tomens:
Rob Lo moved from the leafy countryside to London in 1986, from where he has spent his time exploring diverse musical and cultural avenues. Author of the brilliant EGO series of fanzines in the late '80s/early '90s, Robin is currently investing his writing talents in the regular 'Listen Hear' column for Tangents, as well as exploring the potential in the concept of musical autobiographical novel. Rob was co-founder and DJ with the influential Rumpus Rooms club in London, and was a key face in the eclectic scene. He currently DJs a regular Friday night titled 'Mosaic' at Bartok, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1. (9pm - 1am). Mixing Classical, Electronic and Symphonic musics, it's a treat for the ears. And it's free… Jerry Thackray: Jerry, perhaps better known to the world of journalism as Everett True, has proved adept at making both friends and enemies at almost every turn, thanks to his passionate and forthright opinions. Jerry has written fanzines, made records, edited national music papers and magazines, 'discovered' too many bands to mention (both good and, lets face it Jerry, not so good…) and decamped to Seattle to write for the excellent Stranger paper. He is currently somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere, sending Tangents updates on his progress. Love him or loathe him, you can't ignore him… (although of course you can choose not to read his articles, but that would be such a shame…) Rupert Loydell Rupert Loydell is an acclaimed publisher, poet and artist. He has been running the Stride imprint for twenty years which has published a number of well received poetry collections, as well as assorted musical books. Daniel Williams: Daniel penned a series of fanzines in the mid
'80s, culminating in Pantry for The World towards the end of the
decade. After co-launching the Tangents' paper predecessor Fire
Raisers in 1989 he packed himself off to the wilds of France to
concentrate on writing fiction. He is currently working on a series of
short stories based on the London A-Z, and upon completion intends to
begin work on a second novel. |
